
What do you know about Shawlands?
Shawlands is an inner suburb of Glasgow, which like many similar areas in the city, grew up as a direct response to improved tram links to the city centre, and the need for working/middle class housing prompted by the city's growth in population and economy.
An 18th Century painting shows Shawlands as completely undeveloped, save for a solitary cottage at the Cross (the meeting place of Pollokshaws Road and Kilmarnock Road, and not as is sometimes assumed, the junction of Langside Avenue/Minard Road and Pollokshaws Road).
This would change dramatically within the next century.
