20/5/2008Bungo in the back lanes
This unique community event sees local people unlock their back gates and set up stall in their back lanes to sell everything from pakora to pansies, from hand-made cards to honey from local bees.
For this annual event, attics are cleared and treasures unearthed, ovens work overtime, barbecues are fired up and an array of local talent emerges: from fortune telling to fly-tying it seems like every neighbour has something to contribute.
This year, once again, there will two beer gardens where neighbours and friends can meet, and live jazz and acoustic music will resonate round the cobbled back lanes of the south-side suburb.
The unfunded community event has inspired a motion in the Scottish Parliament calling for support to be given to community and neighbourhood initiatives such as Bungo in the Back Lanes.
Besides building and reflecting a sense of local community, the event aims to exploit an otherwise neglected part of the local urban environment and encourage residents to see the potential of the lanes to the back of their properties which have remained unchanged for the most part since Alexander Greek Thomson designed the original terraces of Moray Place.
